Microcytic anemia can indicate iron deficiency or thalassemia, while macrocytic anemia may suggest vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. Normocytic anemia can be due to chronic disease, hemolysis, or bone marrow failure.
The treatment of anemia is primarily directed towards the underlying cause. Iron supplementation is the mainstay of treatment for iron deficiency anemia, while vitamin B12 or folate supplementation is used for macrocytic anemia. In severe cases, blood transfusion or erythropoiesis-stimulating agents may be required.
