A thorough physical examination is crucial and should include inspection, auscultation, percussion, and palpation. The presence of any abdominal distension, tenderness, or guarding can provide valuable clues about the underlying pathology. Additionally, the location of pain can often suggest the affected organ.
Basic laboratory tests such as complete blood count, liver function tests, and serum electrolytes can provide essential diagnostic information. In females, a pregnancy test should be considered. Depending on the clinical suspicion, more specific tests like amylase or lipase may be ordered.
Imaging studies are indispensable in the evaluation of abdominal pain. Ultrasound is often the first-line imaging modality due to its availability and lack of radiation exposure. Computed tomography (CT) can provide more detailed information and is particularly useful in cases of suspected intra-abdominal abscess or malignancy.
Referral to a specialist should be considered if the diagnosis remains unclear after initial investigations or if the patient's condition deteriorates. Gastroenterologists, surgeons, and gynecologists are often involved in the management of patients with abdominal pain.
Assessing and diagnosing abdominal pain requires a systematic approach, starting from a detailed history and physical examination, followed by appropriate investigations. Timely referral to a specialist can be critical in ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
