Our analysis underscores the pivotal role of FCC in enhancing health trajectories, reducing healthcare utilization, and improving patient and family satisfaction, while also discussing the challenges and ongoing innovations in this dynamic field.
Contemporary healthcare recognizes families as integral contributors to patient well-being, especially in chronic and pediatric care settings. Family-centered care (FCC) is characterized by collaboration, respect, and shared decision-making among families, patients, and clinicians. Its adoption is rooted in the understanding that family dynamics, support structures, and psychosocial contexts profoundly impact health behaviors and outcomes over time. This article reviews FCC's influence on longitudinal health outcomes, synthesizing recent research and expert guidelines to inform evidence-based clinical practice.
The global shift toward chronic disease management and aging populations has heightened the relevance of FCC. Studies indicate that patients with strong family engagement experience fewer hospital readmissions and improved disease-specific outcomes, particularly in pediatrics, geriatrics, and chronic illness cohorts. For example, in pediatric asthma, family involvement correlates with better adherence and lower exacerbation rates. In adult populations, FCC models have been linked to enhanced recovery post-cardiac events and improved glycemic control in diabetes. Effective FCC requires intentional strategies, including family education, involvement in rounds, and shared care planning.
