Abstract

Fluctuations in ovarian hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, modulate neurotransmitter systems, neuroplasticity, and neural circuitry, thereby influencing affective and cognitive domains. This review synthesizes current epidemiological, mechanistic, and clinical insights into neuroendocrine influences on mood and cognition in women, emphasizing the impact of reproductive transitions, risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based management strategies. Recent advances in neuroendocrinology and guideline recommendations are discussed, with a focus on optimizing women's mental and cognitive health in clinical practice.

Introduction

Women's mental and cognitive health is profoundly influenced by neuroendocrine factors, which mediate the interplay between the central nervous system and hormonal fluctuations throughout life. Periods such as puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, postpartum, and the menopausal transition present unique neuroendocrine challenges, often manifesting as mood disturbances or cognitive changes. Understanding these mechanisms provides clinicians with deeper insight into the pathogenesis and management of affective and cognitive disorders in women, facilitating more precise and personalized care.
