FEV1 assesses the amount of air that can be forcibly exhaled in one second, indicating airflow. The FEV1/FVC ratio is crucial in diagnosing obstructive and restrictive lung diseases.

Interpreting Obstructive and Restrictive Patterns

Obstructive diseases (e.g., asthma, COPD) are characterized by reduced FEV1 and FEV1/FVC ratio but normal or increased FVC. Conversely, restrictive diseases (e.g., pulmonary fibrosis) present with reduced FVC, while FEV1 and the FEV1/FVC ratio may be normal or reduced.
