Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a significant and under-acknowledged threat to patient safety. Despite stringent infection control protocols, HAIs continue to compromise healthcare outcomes and inflate costs.
HAIs affect approximately 1.7 million patients annually in the U.S., resulting in 99,000 deaths. The economic burden is estimated at $20 billion per year.
The most prevalent HAIs include catheter-associated urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, bloodstream infections, and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
Prevention strategies encompass rigorous hand hygiene, sterilization of medical equipment, prudent antibiotic use, and vaccination against preventable diseases.
Despite the substantial threat posed by HAIs, with comprehensive understanding and consistent application of prevention strategies, we can significantly reduce their incidence and impact on patient health.
