In cases where initial tests do not yield a diagnosis, additional investigations may be required. Genetic testing, nerve biopsy, and skin biopsy can be considered. Specialized tests like Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) and Autonomic Function Testing (AFT) can be useful in certain cases.
Identifying the underlying cause is crucial in managing peripheral neuropathy. Common causes include diabetes, alcoholism, vitamin deficiencies, and certain medications. Less common causes such as vasculitis, amyloidosis, and inherited disorders should also be considered.
Treatment should be directed towards the underlying cause, if identified. Symptomatic treatment for pain, numbness, and other discomforts is also necessary. Regular follow-up is essential to monitor disease progression and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
