A thorough patient history and physical examination are the cornerstones of dyspnea assessment. Clinicians should inquire about the onset, duration, severity, and associated symptoms of dyspnea. The physical exam should focus on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems but should also include other systems as dyspnea can be a manifestation of various systemic diseases.
The diagnostic approach to dyspnea should be systematic and guided by the patient's history and physical examination findings. Common investigations include chest radiography, spirometry, blood tests, and electrocardiography. More advanced diagnostic tools such as echocardiography or computed tomography may be required based on clinical suspicion.
Management of dyspnea is tailored to the underlying cause. It may involve pharmacological interventions, non-pharmacological strategies such as pulmonary rehabilitation, or a combination of both. Patient education and self-management strategies are also essential components of dyspnea management.
Understanding and managing dyspnea require a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. By integrating a thorough assessment, appropriate diagnostic investigations, and individualized management strategies, clinicians can effectively alleviate dyspnea and improve patient outcomes in the modern healthcare setting.
