Their effectiveness and easy access led to overuse, especially in livestock raising, prompting bacteria to develop resistance. This has led to widespread problems with antimicrobial resistance, which is a significant concern to public health.
Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change in response to the use of these medicines. Bacteria, not humans or animals, become antibiotic-resistant. These bacteria may infect humans and animals, and the infections they cause are harder to treat than those caused by non-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic resistance leads to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality.

It is crucial to prescribe antibiotics only when they are needed, according to current guidelines. The decision to use antibiotics should be based on accurate diagnosis and a careful assessment of the benefits and harms. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics are the leading causes of antibiotic resistance.
Education of healthcare professionals, patients, and the public is key to reducing overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Guidelines and clinical decision support systems can help clinicians decide when and how to use antibiotics. Surveillance of antibiotic use and resistance, and regular feedback to healthcare providers, can also promote rational use. Finally, research is needed to develop new antibiotics and alternative treatments for bacterial infections.
Antibiotic resistance is a serious global health problem that requires a concerted effort to address. The rational use of antibiotics in clinical practice is crucial to slowing the emergence of resistance and preserving the effectiveness of these life-saving drugs. Healthcare professionals have a key role to play in promoting patient health through the rational use of antibiotics.
