Initial assessment should encompass a detailed patient history and physical examination. Identifying symptoms such as fatigue, pallor, and dyspnea, or signs like jaundice and splenomegaly, can provide crucial clues. History of dietary habits, medication, and family history are indispensable.
Complete blood count (CBC) is the cornerstone of anemia diagnosis. It provides vital information about hemoglobin levels, red cell indices, and reticulocyte count. Further, peripheral smear examination can reveal morphological abnormalities, aiding in differential diagnosis.
When initial investigations are inconclusive, advanced diagnostic tools come into play. Bone marrow examination, hemoglobin electrophoresis, or genetic testing may be required. These can help diagnose less common conditions such as aplastic anemia, thalassemia, or myelodysplastic syndromes.
Interpreting results accurately is crucial. The etiology could be nutritional deficiency, hemolysis, or impaired erythropoiesis. Management should be etiology-specific and may range from dietary modification and oral supplementation to blood transfusion or targeted therapies.
Diagnosing anemia requires a systematic approach that integrates clinical assessment with laboratory investigations. Understanding the complexity of anemia can streamline the diagnostic process, improving patient outcomes. Continuous education and staying abreast with recent advancements in hematology is essential for clinicians dealing with anemia.
