Diagnosis of vertigo involves a detailed patient history and physical examination. It's essential to distinguish vertigo from other forms of dizziness. The Dix-Hallpike maneuver and the head impulse test are valuable tools for diagnosis. Imaging studies like MRI or CT scans could be necessary if central nervous system causes are suspected.
Management of vertigo is primarily based on treating the underlying cause. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is a common treatment approach for peripheral causes of vertigo. It involves exercises designed to improve balance and reduce dizziness. Pharmacological treatment may include medications like meclizine, diazepam, or steroids. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be required.
Vertigo can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. Therefore, a comprehensive and systematic approach to its diagnosis and management is crucial.
