Thyroid disorders can broadly be categorized into two types: hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Both conditions can lead to significant morbidity if not diagnosed and managed promptly. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroiditis, while Graves' disease is the primary cause of hyperthyroidism.
The diagnosis of thyroid disorders primarily relies on clinical assessment and laboratory investigations. The first-line test is the measurement of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels. Depending on the TSH results, further tests may include Free T4, Free T3, and thyroid autoantibodies. The treatment of thyroid disorders is tailored according to the underlying cause and severity of the disease. Hypothyroidism is typically managed with levothyroxine replacement therapy, while hyperthyroidism may be treated with antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or thyroidectomy. Regular monitoring of thyroid function tests is essential to ensure appropriate treatment response and to adjust the therapy as needed.
Thyroid disorders in adults are common yet complex conditions that require a comprehensive and systematic approach for effective management. By understanding the pathophysiology, honing diagnostic skills, and applying appropriate treatment strategies, healthcare professionals can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with thyroid disorders.
