PCPs are uniquely positioned to detect early signs of cancer, given their continuous patient interaction and comprehensive understanding of patients’ health histories. They are responsible for initial cancer suspicion, referral for diagnostic testing, and often, the communication of a cancer diagnosis.
Despite their critical role, many PCPs feel inadequately prepared to address cancer in their practice. This underscores the need for enhanced training and resources. PCPs should be equipped with up-to-date knowledge on cancer screening guidelines, risk factors, and the latest diagnostic tools. Additionally, they should have access to decision-support tools and ongoing education opportunities.
Optimizing early cancer detection also necessitates fostering stronger collaborations between PCPs and oncology specialists. Such collaborations can facilitate timely referrals, enhance patient navigation through the healthcare system, and ensure continuity of care from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.
Technology can play a pivotal role in optimizing early cancer detection. Furthermore, AI-based diagnostic tools can help PCPs make more accurate and timely diagnoses.

By doing so, we can improve cancer outcomes and ultimately, save lives.
