Stroke symptoms often appear suddenly. The acronym FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, Time to call emergency services) is a helpful tool for early recognition. Other symptoms include confusion, coordination problems, severe headache, and visual disturbances. A high index of suspicion is necessary, especially in patients with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and atherosclerosis.
Immediate medical intervention is crucial in stroke management. The first step is to ensure the patient's ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) are stable. Next, a non-contrast CT scan should be performed to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This distinction is vital as treatment varies significantly between the two types.
Ischemic strokes, caused by a clot blocking blood flow to the brain, are typically treated with thrombolytic therapy. Intravenous administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) within 4.5 hours of symptom onset can significantly improve outcomes. However, contraindications such as recent surgery or bleeding disorders must be considered.
Hemorrhagic strokes, caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, require different management. The focus is on controlling blood pressure and reducing intracranial pressure. Surgical intervention may be necessary in some cases.
Early recognition and appropriate management of stroke can significantly improve patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals must be adept at recognizing the signs of stroke and initiating appropriate treatment promptly.
