The physical examination should be thorough, starting from general inspection to specific organ palpation. The presence of scars, distension, or visible peristalsis may provide clues. The nature of tenderness, presence of guarding or rigidity, organomegaly, or masses should be noted.
Based on history and examination, appropriate investigations should be chosen. Basic tests include complete blood count, liver and renal function tests, amylase, lipase, and imaging studies. Further investigations like endoscopy, colonoscopy, or exploratory surgery may be needed in complex cases.
Management depends on the underlying cause. It may range from conservative treatment for simple conditions to surgical intervention for severe cases. Regular follow-up is crucial to assess the response to treatment and to monitor for any complications.
Abdominal pain evaluation can be challenging due to its complex nature. A comprehensive approach, encompassing a detailed history, thorough physical examination, appropriate investigations, and follow-up, is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management. This not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces unnecessary investigations and interventions. By decoding the complexity of abdominal pain, clinicians can navigate this common clinical scenario with increased confidence and efficiency.
