Stroke remains one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. Prompt recognition and management are key to improving outcomes, making early stroke recognition a critical skill for all healthcare professionals.
Stroke presents with sudden onset neurological deficits. The acronym FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services) is a useful tool for early recognition. However, other symptoms such as sudden confusion, trouble seeing, difficulty walking, and severe headache with no known cause should also raise suspicion.
Upon suspicion of a stroke, immediate imaging is essential. Non-contrast CT of the brain is typically the first-line imaging modality. It can rule out hemorrhagic stroke and detect early ischemic changes. MRI is more sensitive for early ischemic stroke but is usually reserved for cases where CT results are inconclusive.
Management of stroke is time-sensitive and begins with stabilizing vital signs and maintaining adequate oxygenation and perfusion. In ischemic stroke, thrombolysis or thrombectomy may be considered within a specific time window. Hemorrhagic stroke management focuses on controlling blood pressure and potentially surgical intervention.
Post-stroke care is integral to recovery and prevention of secondary complications. This includes rehabilitation, secondary prevention strategies, and addressing individual patient needs. Regular follow-up and monitoring are also essential.
Early recognition and prompt management of stroke can significantly improve patient outcomes. As healthcare professionals, we must be vigilant in recognizing the early signs of stroke and familiar with the necessary steps to diagnose and manage this condition. Continuing education and training in stroke care are crucial in ensuring the best possible patient care.
