CPAP remains the gold standard in sleep apnea management. This device delivers a constant stream of pressurized air to keep the airways open during sleep. Recent advancements include the development of 'smart' CPAP machines that can adjust pressure levels automatically based on the patient's needs.
Oral appliances, designed to advance the mandible or tongue, have emerged as a viable alternative for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. Advancements in digital technology have improved the customization and fit of these devices, enhancing their efficacy and patient compliance.
UAS is a relatively new, FDA-approved treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. This approach involves the implantation of a device that stimulates the hypoglossal nerve, leading to an increase in muscle tone and preventing airway collapse during sleep.
While there are currently no FDA-approved medications specifically for sleep apnea, ongoing research is exploring the potential of certain drugs to improve upper airway muscle tone. These include serotonin agonists, theophylline, and certain antidepressants.
