The management of Hepatitis, a global health issue, has undergone significant advancements in recent years. This comprehensive update aims to inform healthcare professionals about these developments to enhance patient care.
Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have revolutionized Hepatitis C treatment, with cure rates exceeding 90%. Newer DAAs like Sofosbuvir and Ledipasvir have fewer side effects and shorter treatment duration. Similarly, for Hepatitis B, Tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) provides similar efficacy to Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) but with less renal and bone toxicity.
Diagnostic capacity has also improved. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) core antigen testing is a cost-effective alternative to HCV RNA testing. For Hepatitis B, the Hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) is a promising marker to monitor disease activity and response to treatment.
The Hepatitis B vaccine has been a significant preventive measure. The World Health Organization now recommends a birth dose of Hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, followed by at least two additional doses. For Hepatitis E, the HEV 239 vaccine shows promise, but is currently only available in China.
Research is ongoing to develop a functional cure for Hepatitis B and a vaccine for Hepatitis C. The use of gene editing technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas9, could potentially eliminate Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA from infected liver cells.
Advancements in the management of Hepatitis have led to improved patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals need to stay updated on these developments to provide the best possible care for their patients. The future looks promising with the prospect of functional cures and new vaccines on the horizon.
