Normocytic anemias may be secondary to chronic disease, acute blood loss, or hemolysis. Macrocytic anemias can be caused by vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, myelodysplastic syndromes, or certain medications.
Further diagnostic tests are guided by the MCV classification. Iron studies, hemoglobin electrophoresis, reticulocyte count, and serum B12 and folate levels may be relevant. Bone marrow examination may be necessary in cases of suspected primary bone marrow disorders.
Imaging may be required to identify sources of chronic blood loss, such as gastrointestinal bleeding. It can also help in the evaluation of organomegaly or lymphadenopathy in cases of suspected malignancy.
