Immunotherapy, also known as biologic therapy, involves the use of substances to stimulate or suppress the immune system, aiding it in detecting and combating cancer cells. It can be categorized into several types, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, and adoptive cell transfer.
These inhibitors work by blocking immune checkpoints, proteins used by cancer cells to evade the immune system. By inhibiting these checkpoints, the immune system can better recognize and attack cancer cells. Notable drugs in this category include Pembrolizumab and Nivolumab.
Cancer vaccines, much like traditional vaccines, aim to trigger an immune response. However, instead of preventing disease, these vaccines treat existing cancer by instructing the immune system to attack specific cancer cells.
Adoptive cell transfer involves the modification of a patient's T cells to enhance their ability to fight cancer. CAR-T cell therapy, a type of adoptive cell transfer, has shown remarkable success in treating certain types of lymphomas and leukemias.
Despite its potential, immunotherapy faces several challenges, including unpredictable responses and severe side effects. However, ongoing research and advancements in precision medicine aim to overcome these obstacles, paving the way for more effective and personalized treatments.
Immunotherapy represents a significant paradigm shift in oncology, offering a novel and potent weapon in the battle against cancer. As physicians, it is crucial to stay abreast of these developments, integrating them into practice to provide the best possible care for our patients.
