The first step in diagnosing anemia involves a thorough patient history and physical examination. Laboratory tests, including a complete blood count (CBC) and reticulocyte count, are essential for confirming anemia and assessing its severity.
Anemia can be classified based on the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) into microcytic, normocytic, and macrocytic anemia. This classification aids in narrowing the differential diagnosis. For instance, microcytic anemia often suggests iron deficiency or thalassemia, while macrocytic anemia may indicate vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
Upon establishing the type of anemia, further diagnostic tests are warranted. Iron studies, vitamin B12 and folate levels, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and bone marrow examination may be required depending on the clinical scenario. These tests help identify the underlying cause of anemia and guide treatment strategies.
Anemia often signifies an underlying systemic disease. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach involving gastroenterologists, hematologists, and other specialists may be necessary for comprehensive patient management. This collaborative approach ensures all potential etiologies are considered and treated appropriately.
