Introduction

As healthcare professionals, our role in maintaining the health of our adult patients extends beyond routine check-ups and treatments. Prevention through vaccination plays a crucial role in the overall health management of adults. This article aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in adult vaccination, highlighting the importance of staying updated in this rapidly evolving field.

Shingles Vaccine Update

The recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) is a significant advancement over the live zoster vaccine (ZVL). RZV, approved in 2017, offers over 90% efficacy and is recommended for adults aged 50 years and above, including those who previously received ZVL. It is administered in two doses, two to six months apart.

Influenza Vaccination

The annual influenza vaccine remains a cornerstone of preventive healthcare. Recent advancements have led to the introduction of high-dose and adjuvanted vaccines, providing better protection for older adults. Quadrivalent vaccines, offering protection against an additional B virus strain, have also been introduced.

Pneumococcal Vaccination

Changes in pneumococcal vaccination recommendations have been made due to the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). It is now recommended in a series with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) for adults aged 65 years and above, and for adults with certain risk factors.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

The recent approval of a new two-dose hepatitis B vaccine, Heplisav-B, has shown a higher protection rate compared to the three-dose series. It is recommended for adults aged 18 years and older, particularly those at risk of hepatitis B virus infection.

Conclusion

With the rapid advancements in adult vaccination, it is paramount for healthcare professionals to stay updated to provide optimal preventive care. These updates not only offer improved protection against diseases but also enhance the efficiency of vaccine administration, contributing to the overall health of our adult patients.
