Additional investigations, such as sleep studies or psychiatric evaluations, may be necessary based on initial findings.
Management of fatigue involves treating the underlying cause, if identified. This could involve medication for medical conditions, or psychotherapy and lifestyle modifications for mental health or lifestyle-related causes. In cases where no clear cause is identified, symptom management and supportive care are crucial. This may involve cognitive-behavioral therapy, graded exercise therapy, and strategies to improve sleep hygiene and manage stress.
Prognosis varies greatly depending on the underlying cause. Regular follow-up is essential to monitor response to treatment and adjust management strategies as needed. It is also important to reassess patients periodically for the development of new symptoms or conditions that could contribute to fatigue.
Fatigue is a complex symptom that requires a comprehensive clinical approach for effective diagnosis and management. By implementing a systematic approach and considering a wide range of potential causes, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
