Emphasis is placed on the use of telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI), electronic health records (EHR), mobile health applications, and remote monitoring devices. The discussion synthesizes recent evidence, guideline-based recommendations, and the practical implications for clinicians. The review also highlights the benefits, limitations, and future directions of digital rheumatology practice, aiming to provide healthcare professionals with a nuanced understanding of this evolving landscape.

Introduction

Rheumatology, the subspecialty dedicated to diagnosing and managing disorders of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissues, faces unique challenges due to the chronic, multisystemic, and often complex nature of its diseases. Digital health technologies—ranging from telemedicine and electronic documentation to AI-driven analytics—have emerged as pivotal tools in addressing these challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital approaches, fostering innovation in patient engagement, disease monitoring, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This review explores strategic approaches in rheumatology in the digital era, focusing on evidence-based integration of digital tools to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes.

Epidemiology / Disease Burden

The global burden of rheumatic diseases is substantial, with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and osteoarthritis affecting millions worldwide.
