Lung volume tests assess the maximum amount of air lungs can hold, while diffusion capacity tests measure how well oxygen moves from lungs into the blood.
Spirometry results are compared to predicted values based on the patient’s age, height, sex, and ethnicity. Reductions in Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) or Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) may indicate restrictive or obstructive lung diseases respectively. The FEV1/FVC ratio is particularly important in differentiating between these conditions.
