Unani medicine, an established system of traditional healthcare, is widely practiced in South Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. Its holistic approach, focusing on temperament (mizaj), humoral balance, and personalized care, faces challenges in the era of digital transformation. Telehealth has emerged as a potential solution to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in remote or underserved regions. Effective documentation is central to telehealth, ensuring quality, traceability, and medico-legal compliance. This article explores the scientific and clinical implications of telehealth documentation within Unani practice, aiming to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of its current status, operational mechanics, and future prospects.
The global burden of chronic diseases, mental health conditions, and infectious diseases necessitates accessible, affordable, and culturally sensitive healthcare solutions. Unani practitioners serve millions worldwide, with India alone hosting over 500,000 registered practitioners and numerous dedicated hospitals and clinics. Telehealth services, particularly post-pandemic, have enabled Unani providers to reach vast patient populations, reducing travel burdens and minimizing infection risks. However, the lack of standardized documentation protocols has led to challenges in data integrity, research, and outcome measurement, underscoring the need for structured telehealth documentation.
