This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of effective strategies for managing enteric fever in clinical practice.

Epidemiology and Diagnosis

Understanding the epidemiology of enteric fever is crucial for effective management. It predominantly affects regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. Diagnosis is often challenging due to non-specific symptoms. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is needed in endemic areas or in patients with relevant travel history. Blood culture remains the gold standard for diagnosis, but newer molecular techniques are emerging as valuable diagnostic tools.

Antimicrobial Therapy

The cornerstone of enteric fever management is antimicrobial therapy. However, increasing resistance to traditional first-line drugs like chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole necessitates the use of fluoroquinolones, azithromycin, or third-generation cephalosporins.
