Fever, also known as pyrexia or a febrile illness, is a common medical condition experienced by people of all ages and backgrounds. Fever is defined as an elevation in body temperature above the normal range of 98.6°F (37°C). Fever is often accompanied by other symptoms such as chills, body aches, headache, and fatigue. It is important for doctors to understand the causes and treatments of febrile illness in order to provide the best care for their patients.
Fever is usually caused by an infection, either viral or bacterial. Viral infections are the most common cause of fever. Common viral infections that can cause fever include influenza (the flu), the common cold, and various other respiratory viruses. Bacterial infections such as strep throat, urinary tract infections, and ear infections can also cause fever. Other causes of fever include certain medications, immunizations, and certain medical conditions such as cancer.
In order to diagnose a fever, doctors will typically take a patient’s temperature. This can be done orally, rectally, or axillary (under the arm). Additional tests may be ordered depending on the patient’s symptoms and medical history. These tests may include a complete blood count (CBC), a urinalysis, or a throat culture.
The treatment of fever depends on the underlying cause. If the fever is caused by a viral infection, treatment is generally focused on relieving symptoms. This may include over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce fever and body aches, and decongestants to relieve nasal congestion. If the fever is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.
The best way to prevent fever is to practice good hygiene and to get vaccinated against common illnesses. Vaccinations can help prevent illnesses such as influenza, which can cause fever. It is also important to wash hands regularly and avoid contact with people who are sick.
