The initial evaluation of anemia should include a thorough history and physical examination. Attention should be paid to symptoms indicative of blood loss, hemolysis, or impaired red cell production. Laboratory investigations should comprise a complete blood count, reticulocyte count, and peripheral smear examination.
Anemia is classified as microcytic, normocytic, or macrocytic based on mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, and anemia of chronic disease typically present as microcytic anemia, while vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies result in macrocytic anemia. Normocytic anemia is often due to renal disease, early iron deficiency, or anemia of chronic inflammation.
