Accurate documentation of gastrointestinal (GI) medication allergies is a critical component of patient safety and effective pharmacological management. This review synthesizes current evidence regarding the epidemiology, mechanisms, clinical features, risk factors, diagnostic modalities, management strategies, and recent advances in the field of GI medication allergy documentation. Emphasis is placed on guideline-based recommendations, practical approaches to mitigate adverse reactions, and the integration of digital health solutions for improved clinical outcomes. The article provides an in-depth, clinically actionable resource for healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients requiring GI pharmacotherapy.
\nGastrointestinal disorders often necessitate the use of a wide array of pharmacologic agents, ranging from acid suppressants to prokinetics and immunomodulatory drugs. The prevalence of medication allergies—true immunologically mediated reactions as opposed to intolerance or adverse effects—poses significant challenges in prescribing, particularly in the context of polypharmacy and comorbid conditions. Reliable documentation of GI medication allergies is vital to avoid preventable adverse drug reactions, ensure effective therapy, and optimize patient safety. \nGI medication allergy documentation is a vital yet often underappreciated facet of safe and effective patient care. Meticulous, evidence-based recording of allergy history, reaction details, and diagnostic certainty enables informed prescribing, minimizes adverse outcomes, and supports personalized therapy. Recent advances in digital health and pharmacogenomics are poised to transform the landscape, offering new opportunities for precision allergy management. Ongoing education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and adherence to guideline-based practices remain essential for optimizing outcomes in patients with suspected or confirmed GI medication allergies.
