Functional recovery in the context of acute and chronic tissue damage has long been recognized as a central goal in contemporary healthcare. Nurses, as frontline providers, are uniquely positioned to lead regeneration-oriented care models that emphasize tissue repair, restoration of physiologic function, and holistic patient-centered interventions. With the advent of regenerative medicine, nursing practice is expanding to incorporate novel strategies that promote endogenous healing and functional improvement across a spectrum of disorders. Regeneration-oriented care models are grounded in the biological principles of tissue repair and homeostasis. Tissue injury triggers a complex cascade involving hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling phases. Disruptions in these processes, due to inadequate cellular response, chronic inflammation, or impaired angiogenesis, can impede functional recovery. Nursing interventions aimed at modulating these phases through wound care, mobilization, nutritional support, and patient education directly influence cellular and molecular pathways critical for regeneration. Nursing professionals contribute significantly to the diagnostic process via systematic observation, documentation of functional status, and coordination of interdisciplinary assessments. Recent advancements in biomarker discovery and imaging modalities such as MRI for soft tissue evaluation and wound perfusion metrics enhance the precision of diagnosis and subsequent care planning, reinforcing the pivotal role of nursing in diagnostic stewardship.
Management within regeneration-oriented care models is inherently multidisciplinary but relies heavily on nursing leadership in care coordination, patient education, and implementation of evidence-based interventions. Key components include early mobilization, targeted exercise regimens, advanced wound care techniques, nutritional optimization, and psychosocial support. Nurses also facilitate the integration of novel regenerative therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma, stem cell applications, and biophysical modalities (e.g., electrical stimulation), into individualized care plans. Recent clinical guidelines from authoritative bodies such as the American Nurses Association and international rehabilitation societies emphasize the centrality of nursing in regeneration-oriented models. Recommendations stress the importance of early intervention, evidence-based wound care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient empowerment. Regular training, adherence to infection control standards, and utilization of validated assessment tools are also highlighted.
