With aging populations and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, optimizing function has become a cornerstone in preventive and therapeutic healthcare. This article explores the scientific foundations and clinical guidelines for functional health optimization, providing clinicians with evidence-based frameworks to support patients across the lifespan.
Globally, functional decline represents a significant public health challenge. According to the World Health Organization, over 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability that impacts functional capacity. The burden of functional impairment rises sharply with age: approximately 35% of adults over 70 exhibit limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs). Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions are primary contributors to functional decline.
