Abstract

This review synthesizes recent evidence on epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and emerging therapies, with a focus on practical guidance for healthcare professionals managing this high-risk population.

The transition through reproductive aging, culminating in menopause, marks a critical window for the emergence of cardiometabolic disorders in women. As life expectancy increases globally, a substantial proportion of women spend a third or more of their lives in the postmenopausal period, during which the prevalence and burden of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases escalate. Screening should include blood pressure measurement, fasting glucose or HbA1c, lipid profile, and assessment of waist circumference. Biomarkers such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and imaging modalities (e.g., coronary artery calcium scoring) may aid in further risk refinement in selected cases.

Treatment & Management

Optimal management of cardiometabolic health after reproductive aging requires a multifaceted approach. Lifestyle intervention remains the cornerstone, with emphasis on a Mediterranean-style diet, regular physical activity, and weight management. Pharmacologic therapy is indicated for hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes according to current guidelines. Statins, ACE inhibitors, and SGLT2 inhibitors have demonstrated benefit in reducing cardiovascular events. Personalized, culturally sensitive strategies are recommended to address disparities in care and optimize adherence to lifestyle and pharmacological interventions.
