This review synthesizes recent scientific literature, clinical guidelines, and innovative models to highlight the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and emerging therapies relevant to workforce well-being in nursing. Emphasis is placed on mechanisms underpinning occupational stress, evidence-based interventions, and the translation of research into practice, providing clinicians, nurse leaders, and healthcare administrators with actionable insights to foster resilient, sustainable, and high-performing nursing environments.

Introduction

The health of the nursing workforce is foundational to the effective delivery of patient care and the overall performance of healthcare systems. Workforce ecosystems refer to the dynamic and interdependent networks of individuals, teams, organizational structures, and environmental factors that influence nurses well-being, job satisfaction, and professional fulfillment. In recent years, the complexity of healthcare delivery, exacerbated by global health crises and persistent workforce shortages, has intensified the need to develop robust strategies for building and maintaining healthy nursing ecosystems. Understanding the scientific underpinnings and clinical implications of workforce health is crucial for developing sustainable solutions that benefit both caregivers and the populations they serve.

Epidemiology / Disease Burden

Globally, nursing professionals represent the largest sector of the healthcare workforce. Data from the World Health Organization estimate a global shortfall of nearly 6 million nurses, with high attrition rates and burnout prevalence exceeding 40% in some regions. Treatment & Management

Management strategies for fostering healthy nursing workforce ecosystems require a comprehensive approach that integrates individual, organizational, and systemic interventions. Organizational initiatives include optimizing staffing models, promoting shared governance, providing professional development opportunities, and enhancing leadership training.
