Drawing upon recent research, we evaluate epidemiological trends, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical features, diagnostic criteria, and management approaches, while highlighting recent advances and guideline recommendations. A comprehensive understanding of these pathways may inform multidisciplinary recovery protocols and enhance patient care following critical illness.
The aftermath of critical illness is often marked by prolonged physiological dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and diminished quality of life. Despite advancements in intensive care, many survivors experience persistent physical, cognitive, and psychological sequelae collectively termed post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Traditional recovery strategies, while effective in many cases, are frequently limited by complications such as chronic inflammation, sarcopenia, immune suppression, and impaired functional status. Rasayana, a branch of Ayurveda focused on systemic rejuvenation, offers a unique, integrative framework for post-critical illness recovery.
