Key safety domains include hypoglycemia risk, cardiovascular and renal outcomes, off-target effects, and considerations in special populations. A nuanced understanding of these safety aspects is essential for optimizing therapeutic decisions and improving patient outcomes.

Introduction

The management of hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus has evolved significantly with the introduction of innovative pharmacological platforms. Traditional agents such as insulin and sulfonylureas, while effective, are often associated with adverse events including hypoglycemia and weight gain. The emergence of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, and multi-agonist peptides has expanded the therapeutic armamentarium, offering improved glycemic control and added benefits such as cardiovascular and renal protection.
