Mental health symptoms range from depression and anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder. Sleep disturbances, chronic pain, and persistent organ dysfunction (e.g., renal insufficiency, respiratory impairment) are also common. Importantly, these symptoms may be under-recognized without systematic assessment, highlighting the value of structured follow-up protocols.

Diagnosis

Comprehensive post-ICU assessment includes detailed history, physical examination, and validated screening tools for physical, cognitive, and psychological domains. Instruments such as the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) are frequently employed. Laboratory investigations, pulmonary function tests, and imaging may be indicated based on clinical suspicion. Multidisciplinary clinics specializing in post-ICU care have demonstrated enhanced diagnostic accuracy and patient-centered management.

Treatment & Management

Management of post-ICU sequelae is inherently multidisciplinary, involving intensivists, primary care physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and social workers. Early mobilization, structured physical rehabilitation, cognitive training, and psychological interventions are cornerstone strategies. Pharmacologic management may be warranted for pain, sleep disturbances, or mood disorders. Patient education, caregiver support, and social reintegration programs further improve outcomes. Individualized care plans, informed by regular reassessment, are essential for addressing evolving needs during recovery.

Recent Advances / Emerging Therapies

Emerging interventions focus on remote monitoring, telehealth follow-up, and digital health platforms enabling real-time symptom tracking and care coordination.
