Managing obesity effectively necessitates a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that includes lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and potentially bariatric surgery. This article outlines key strategies for successful obesity management.
As the cornerstone of obesity management, lifestyle modifications encompass dietary changes, physical activity, and behavioral interventions. Healthcare professionals should guide patients towards a balanced, calorie-controlled diet and regular exercise, while providing support for behavioral changes. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown effectiveness in promoting long-term weight loss.
When lifestyle modifications alone are insufficient, pharmacotherapy can be a valuable adjunct. Several FDA-approved medications are available for long-term weight management, including orlistat, liraglutide, and phentermine-topiramate. These should be prescribed in conjunction with lifestyle interventions and regular follow-ups to monitor progress and side effects.
