Abstract

Digital lifestyle factors including screen time, social media engagement, online gaming, and mobile device use have become pervasive in children's daily lives. The medical community is increasingly concerned about the short- and long-term health implications of these digital exposures. This review synthesizes recent scientific evidence regarding the epidemiology, mechanisms, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management, and guideline recommendations related to the impact of digital lifestyles on pediatric health. Emphasis is placed on clinically relevant outcomes such as sleep disturbance, mental health, obesity, and cognitive development, as well as evidence-based strategies for intervention. The article aims to provide healthcare professionals with a robust foundation for integrating digital health considerations into clinical pediatric practice.

Introduction

The rapid advancement and ubiquitous adoption of digital technologies have substantially transformed the daily routines of children worldwide. From smartphones and tablets to computers and connected toys, digital devices are now integral to communication, education, and recreation. While these technologies offer developmental and educational benefits, mounting evidence points to a spectrum of adverse physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes associated with excessive or inappropriate digital media use. Key recommendations emphasize setting clear screen time limits, prioritizing quality content, active parental engagement, and regular digital detox periods. Clinicians are urged to incorporate digital health screening into routine pediatric visits and provide anticipatory guidance tailored to developmental stage and family environment. Special considerations are outlined for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and those at heightened psychosocial risk.

Digital lifestyle factors exert substantial and growing influence on multiple domains of child health. Clinicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for digital-related health issues and adopt a proactive, evidence-based approach to assessment and intervention. Ongoing research, technological innovation, and cross-sector collaboration will be pivotal in addressing the evolving challenges posed by digital environments and optimizing health outcomes for children in the digital age.
