TB is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. The bacteria can survive in the air for several hours and can be inhaled by people nearby. TB is most commonly found in the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body such as the kidneys, spine, and brain. New drugs are being developed to treat drug-resistant TB, which is a growing problem in many parts of the world. These drugs are designed to be more effective and have fewer side effects than existing drugs. New diagnostics are being developed to detect TB more quickly and accurately.
