This review explores the traditional Unani approach to immune balance, correlating classical doctrines with current scientific insights. Focusing on pathophysiology, epidemiological perspectives, risk factors, and clinical features, the article discusses diagnostic and therapeutic approaches within Unani medicine and integrates recent advances and guideline-based recommendations for contemporary practice. The evidence-based narrative draws connections between traditional paradigms and modern immunological science, providing clinicians with a comprehensive appraisal of Unani concepts relevant to immune health.

Introduction

The Unani medical tradition, originating from Greco-Arabic roots, conceptualizes health as a dynamic equilibrium between the body’s humors (Akhlat): blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Central to this is the notion of "immune balance", which is governed by the power of self-preservation (Quwwat-e-Mudabbira-e-Badan). This principle is analogous to the modern immune system’s role in maintaining internal stability and defending against disease. Collaboration between Unani practitioners and allopathic physicians is essential for optimizing patient outcomes and advancing the evidence base.
