The realm of lipid management has seen significant advancements over the past decade. These developments have revolutionized the approach towards dyslipidemia, a condition contributing to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This article provides an update on the latest advancements in lipid management.
Novel therapeutic agents have emerged, offering better lipid control. PCSK9 inhibitors, such as Evolocumab and Alirocumab, have shown a significant reduction in LDL-C levels. Additionally, Bempedoic acid, an ATP citrate lyase inhibitor, has demonstrated a promising LDL-C reduction without the common side effects associated with statins.
Genetic screening is increasingly being used to identify patients at risk of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Early detection and management of FH can prevent premature CVDs. Genetic testing can also help in tailoring lipid-lowering therapies for individual patients.
Non-invasive imaging techniques such as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) have been useful in assessing atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk. These techniques provide valuable information beyond traditional lipid profile measurements.
Despite the advent of novel therapies, the role of lifestyle modifications remains pivotal in lipid management. A diet low in saturated fats, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight are foundational to managing dyslipidemia. Emerging evidence also supports the role of nutraceuticals in lipid management.

As healthcare professionals, it is essential to stay updated with these advancements to provide optimal care to patients with dyslipidemia.
