However, additional signs can include sudden confusion, trouble seeing, difficulty walking, and severe headache with no known cause.
Once a potential stroke is identified, immediate assessment is crucial. A detailed history and physical examination should be conducted, focusing on neurological findings. Tools such as the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) can be used to quantify the severity of the stroke. Additionally, imaging studies, primarily computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are essential for confirming the diagnosis and determining the type of stroke.
Early management of stroke involves immediate stabilization, including securing the airway, maintaining blood pressure, and regulating blood glucose levels. For ischemic stroke, thrombolytic therapy with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) may be initiated within the 4.5-hour window from symptom onset. In hemorrhagic stroke, management focuses on controlling hypertension and potentially surgical intervention.
