By illuminating epidemiological trends, pathophysiological mechanisms, and evidence-based management pathways, this article provides clinicians and stakeholders with actionable insights for optimizing patient recovery and minimizing long-term disability after critical illness.

Introduction

Advancements in intensive care medicine have led to improved survival rates among critically ill patients; however, the sequelae of critical illness—collectively termed post-intensive care syndrome (PICS)—pose significant challenges for survivors, families, and healthcare providers. PICS encompasses a spectrum of physical, cognitive, and psychological impairments that can persist for months or years, leading to substantial long-term disability. Understanding the public health strategies that address these outcomes is essential for clinicians, policymakers, and rehabilitation experts aiming to improve post-discharge trajectories and reduce societal burden.
