Imaging studies such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can further delineate the cause of pain. Endoscopic procedures may be warranted in certain cases.
Special considerations should be given to certain populations. In women of childbearing age, gynecological causes should be considered. In elderly patients, vascular causes like mesenteric ischemia should be in the differential diagnosis. In patients with a history of surgery, postoperative complications or adhesions could be the cause.
Management should be tailored according to the underlying cause. This may range from conservative management with analgesics and dietary modifications, to surgical intervention in cases of acute abdomen. Referral to a specialist may be necessary in complex cases.
