This review synthesizes current scientific and clinical evidence regarding the mechanisms underlying resilience, its epidemiological burden, key risk and protective factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based interventions. Special attention is given to recent advances, emerging therapies, and guideline recommendations to guide practitioners in optimizing developmental outcomes for vulnerable pediatric populations.
Childhood adversity is a major public health concern, with substantial implications for lifelong health and societal well-being. Despite exposure to risk, many children demonstrate resilience the capacity to attain positive outcomes despite significant threats to development. Understanding the biological and psychosocial mechanisms of resilience, alongside clinically relevant interventions, is essential for healthcare professionals seeking to mitigate the negative impact of early adversity and foster optimal developmental outcomes.
Data from longitudinal and population-based studies indicate that up to 60% of children experience at least one potentially traumatic event by adolescence. However, only a subset develop adverse outcomes, highlighting the role of resilience as a protective factor.
