Abstract

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, has garnered significant interest in recent years for its integrative approach to functional rehabilitation. Structured mind-body practices within Ayurveda, such as yoga, pranayama, meditation, and dinacharya (daily routine), offer promising adjuncts to conventional medical care for restoring functional well-being in patients with chronic diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological impairments, and psychosomatic illnesses. This review critically examines the epidemiological burden of functional disabilities, elaborates on the pathophysiological mechanisms addressed by Ayurvedic mind-body interventions, delineates clinical features, diagnostic approaches, and discusses evidence-based management strategies. Recent advances, emerging therapies, and current consensus guidelines are also explored to provide clinicians with practical frameworks for integrating Ayurvedic modalities into comprehensive rehabilitation plans.

Introduction

Functional well-being encompasses an individual\"s ability to perform daily activities, maintain autonomy, and achieve psychosocial fulfillment. Modern rehabilitation medicine increasingly recognizes the importance of holistic, patient-centered strategies to restore and sustain function, particularly for individuals with chronic conditions. Ayurveda's mind-body practices offer structured, evidence-supported modalities that can complement biomedical interventions. The interplay between the mind, body, and environment—a cornerstone of Ayurvedic philosophy—forms the basis for interventions aimed at rebalancing physiological systems, modulating stress responses, and enhancing neuroplasticity. This article reviews the scientific basis and practical application of these practices in the context of functional rehabilitation, with a focus on integrating traditional wisdom and contemporary clinical evidence.

Emerging research highlights the neurobiological underpinnings of Ayurvedic mind-body practices. Professional bodies such as the World Health Organization, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Indian Ministry of AYUSH endorse the incorporation of structured mind-body practices into comprehensive rehabilitation paradigms. Current guidelines recommend individualized program design, regular monitoring, and collaboration between conventional and Ayurvedic practitioners to optimize safety and efficacy. Emphasis is placed on patient education, shared decision-making, and ongoing evaluation of functional outcomes. Training of healthcare professionals in the principles and practicalities of Ayurveda is increasingly recognized as a key enabler for successful integration.

Structured mind-body practices in Ayurveda represent a scientifically grounded, clinically relevant adjunct to conventional rehabilitation for restoring functional well-being.
